FRL Value and Belief Statements
We believe that the public, private and nonprofit sectors share an integrated responsibility to each other and to Canada’s environmental, social, cultural and economic landscape. We value the role of each sector’s contribution in building a vital Canadian society and we value working in collaboration across all three sectors.

We believe that vital rural communities make an integral contribution to Canada’s environmental, social, cultural, and economic landscape. We value vital rural communities as an essential part of Canada’s society and Canada’s national identity, and we value the qualities of rural communities.
We believe that vital rural communities are built on a number of integrated factors including the environment, access to healthcare, quality of education, a vibrant social and cultural life, and a prosperous economy, and that these factors are common to urban communities as well. We value multi-dimensional solutions that transcend boundaries of place and circumstance.
We believe that rural communities fundamentally recognize what they need to thrive and we believe that a sustainable rural non-profit and voluntary sector that has the capacity to respond to community priorities is integral to the vitality of rural communities. We value dynamic rural nonprofit organizations that create innovative solutions to the evolving priorities of its community.
We believe that passionate people with knowledge and resources create success. FRL's Strategic Directions
Rural Based Research To improve the understanding of the rural charitable sector and establish a baseline for growth.
Activities: The Rural Charitable Sector Research Initiative: A Portrait of the Rural Non-profit and Voluntary Sector. FRL has partnered with Imagine Canada (formerly the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy) in a formal research project designed to build understanding of the trends and patterns affecting the rural voluntary sector. The first full-scale study to analyze and describe the rural non-profit sector was launched in February 2003. This extensive research project has resulted in two reports “The Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector in Rural Ontario” and “The Capacity Challenges of Rural Non-profit and Voluntary Organizations in Rural Ontario”.
Rural Philanthropy Roundtable: A consultation process funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Rural Philanthropy Roundtable engaged foundation, corporate and community leaders, individual philanthropists and rural practitioners in sharing their perspective on rural, develop a strategy for fostering interest and investment and develop champions to lead.
Community/Resource Development To build sustainable capacity in rural nonprofit and voluntary organizations emphasizing financial sustainability.
Activities: The Rural Philanthropy Resource Network: The Rural Philanthropy Resource Network is a combination of strategies that have been developed and implemented by FRL since 2003. This resource network provides rural individuals, communities and organizations with the knowledge, training and support needed to successfully expand community investment and build the infrastructure necessary to develop and manage programs & services. Recognizing excellence To foster quality and, celebrate and model rural innovation.
Activities: FRL’s annual Awards of Rural Excellence recognizes the unique efforts of the people and organizations of rural Ontario who, through leadership, partnership and innovation, enhance the quality of life in their communities and serve as models of excellence and innovation for us all.
Investing in rural To increase philanthropy and community support for worthy charitable programs.
Activities: FRL has and will continue to serve as a vehicle for donors to make contributions to rural communities. Designated and 'field of interest' funds are encouraged to support a variety of rural concerns.
