Who are the Rural Organizations Participating in the RDO Program

Rural organizations have been participating in the Rural Development Officer program since 2004.  Initially an Ontario program, FRL received funding in 2005 to develop a virtual resource learning centre and to expand the Rural Development Officer program to Nova Scotia. In 2007 the RDO program welcomed 21 rural organizations in Nova Scotia to a new fund development capacity buidling RDO progam.

Meet a Past Host Organization

Jane Goodall Institute of Canada

The Jane Goodall Institute came on board as one of the Foundation for Rural Living’s host organizations in March 2006.  Founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, The Jane Goodall Institute is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife research, conservation and education, promoting informed and compassionate action to improve the environment shared by all Earths living creatures.

The Jane Goodall Institute in Canada runs three programs:
Roots & Shoots
An environmental and humanitarian program to engage youth of all ages through service learning. Groups clean up shorelines, work to protect wild animals, and organize events to increase understanding about diverse ethnic traditions.

Chimp Guardian—adopting a chimp
The support of Chimp Guardians contributes to the care, nourishment and shelter of over 100 orphaned chimpanzees in the Institute’s six African sanctuaries. In return, Guardians receive a certificate, Chimp Guardian newsletters and updates on their chimp.

Chimpanzee Sanctuaries
JGI Canada supports the operations of two chimpanzee sanctuaries. Tchimpounga, in the Republic of Congo provides care and protection for 96 chimps. Ngamba Island in Uganda, shelters 30 chimps.

Howitt ParkKrista Long, Regional Coordinator for Ontario is a big supporter of the Rural Development Officer Internship Program, “being a host organization is the easy part., the staff at FRL really does all the work and we reap the benefits!  The program is great.  I don’t think any other program compares for increasing the capacity for non-profit organizations.”  An RDO placement has allowed the JGI Canada to increase their capacity to write proposals and initiate research and resource development. “With only one part time person in the Ontario office, having one more set of hands has helped us to accomplish more than we imagined. The skill set of our RDOs has been amazing and we could not have accomplished this much without the program.”

“Every individual matters.
Every individual has a role to play.
 Every individual makes a difference.”
                             Dr. Jane Goodall
