What is the Rural Development Officer Program?
The Rural Development Officer Program is an opportunity for your nonprofit, voluntary or charitable organization to participate in a year long program designed to increase your fund development capacity and enhance your philanthropic investment.
Do you need to develop a fund development plan? Why do you need to write a compelling case statement? Are you interested in developing and implementing new strategies in your organization? Would you benefit from having access to a coach or mentor? If these are questions you are asking yourself, we encourage you to become a part of the Rural Development Oficcer Program.
In the Rural Development Officer program, rural nonprofit organizations partner with the Foundation for Rural Living to build a long term sustainability plan. But we know having a plan is only part of the strategy - coaching, mentoring and networking with your peers will help keep you moving forward to achieving some of those goals.
Over the year you will:
-
Assess your organizations fund development capacity and set a long term goal
-
Develop a comprehensive fund development plan
-
Write a compelling case for support
-
Participate in a fund development training program designed for your needs
-
Expand your board, staff and volunteers capacity to raise funds for your organization
-
Have access to the resources and infomation at FRL's Learning & Resource Centre at www.ruralphilanthropy.ca (this website!)
-
Develop a network of support through our online discussion boards, in-person meetings and web-conferencing peer networking opportunities
-
Receive coaching & mentoring at all levels in the development and implementation of your fund development plan
How do you get involved?
Selection of organizations is through an application process. This year a maximum of 24 rural nonprofit organizations will be provided the opportunity to participate. To participate you must be:
- A nonprofit, voluntary or charitable organization located in a rural community in Ontario, Nova Scotia or Manitoba.
- Ready to commit time and resources to develop and implement your fund development plan.
- Able to identify a fund development team who will participate in the activities of the Rural Development Officer Program for one year. Your team will have at least one board member, a senior staff person (or the person who acts in the role of an executive or program director) and one staff or volunteer, to fulfill the role of the Rural Development Officer.
Before you apply - Consider these questions!
Your success in the Rural Development Officer Program will depend on your commitment not only to implementing a fund development plan for your organization, but also in your commitment to the RDO program, the other participating organizations and of course to yourself. Take a moment and consider these questions:
- Are you ready to commit to the RDO program for one year?
- Is your Board of Directors committed to developing a long term fund development strategy?
- Is your staff person supportive of participating in this program?
- Is your fund development team willing to commit time to the training and coaching & mentoring sessions?
- Will your organization be prepared to implement the strategies recommended by your fund development team?
- Will you allow your fund development team to share their experiences with other nonprofit organizations involved in the program?
- Are you willing to participate in a participatory evaluation process for this project?
- Some parts of this program rely on web-based conferencing. Will you be able to access a computer and high speed internet connection or make arrangements to be provided access at another location?
